Pegasus Bridge & Sword Beach

Published on 8 July 2026 at 15:14

We have been using our gravel bikes this week, they are perfect for the mix between roads (nice flat surfaces no potholes πŸ₯°) some excellent cycle paths, as well as some trails.

Yesterday we covered some 38 miles (61kms) & a fairly low ascent of 1,342 ft (409 metres).

Today I loaded the wrong on route on to Garmin & we headed off in totally the wrong direction, up a blooming big hill, so we did an extra 8 miles or 20 km or so.   I did think about singing "lost in France" by Bonnie Tyler, but I'm not sure it would have been appreciated & my singing voice is not good. So probs a good idea to keep quiet. we cycled some 50 ish miles ( 88 kms) with 1,700 ft (310 m) of ascent.

The site we are staying in is lovely πŸ₯° . I shall have to check out the history when get home. It has a huge Union Flag and these 2 mannequins.......presumably a sailor/ soldier πŸ‘¨‍✈️and a nurse πŸ‘©‍βš•οΈ ummm interesting pose 😳🀷‍♀️ oh la la 🀭

We cycled along Sword Beach & then to Pegasus Bridge for lunch.  The will & determination required of Major John Howard & his men to get so far was incredible.

Tracy very helpfully managed to reverse the route, so fortunately we managed to get back with any further routing errors.  A short stop in Thaon, where white cola was the order the day. πŸ‘Š the last 8 miles was tough in the heat.

Rodney made sure we stretched when we got off the bikes before we collapsed in a heap.

thank you for reading πŸ₯°

Sounds like a lovely, yet poignant trip. Hopefully it won't get as hot as it is here - I certainly wouldn't want to be cycling in the afternoons. Hopefully the vino will cool you down. Enjoy the rest of your trip. J
