For many years, I’ve felt a strong desire to go bike-packing. TBH, I’ve never quite summoned the courage to do it, especially venturing out on my own. However, I recently met a fellow cyclist named Norman during my Channel to Med trip in 2023.

At the remarkable age of 76, he plans to cycle around the coast of Great Britain, raising money for Myton Hospice & Prostate Cancer. He is starting May 25th, 2026 and doing a mix of camping and B&B’s.  So (give or take) approx- 4,650 miles, (7,500 kms) his plan is to do (give or take) 60 miles per day at an average speed of 10 mph. It's a considerable challenge anyway and given the extra weight he will be carrying it makes it even harder.

I couldn’t pass up the chance to join him (be rude not to really). I’ll be leaving home at the end of May, cycling to Malvern, Worcestershire, then onto Chepstow, Monmouthshire & meeting up with him to cycle around the Welsh coast! 😊🚴‍♀️👍 Approx 635 miles (1,000 kms) with 34,500 feet (10,450 metres) of elevation.

Embarking on this adventure is a leap into the unknown as I’ve never camped. It’s definitely pushing me beyond my comfort zone! 😮 I’m sure that’s a good thing?  😳 Most of my family and friends believe I’ll only manage one night under the stars before retreating to a hotel. We’ll see how it goes, if it's cold, wet and windy, I may well be on the next train home. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind 🤞🏻🤞🏻and the hills will be manageable 😊

If you have read this and haven’t fallen asleep, thank you.

Norman does like company and has appealed for people to join him on his journey, so if you would like to support him, leave a comment or send me a message and I’ll get back you.

I will be putting regular updates out, scroll down and click on one of below photos with a writing link on it, if you would like to have  a read 😊

Etape Loch Ness

Backpacking has been put aside for a whole weekend!  The road bike is out & I've signed up for an ETape; not something I have done previously.   An Etape is an actual cycle race 🚴‍♀️. It's on closed roads. This one starts and finishes in Inverness. Going around Loch Ness & the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Approx 66 miles (105 km) 3,586 ft (1,009 m) of elevation  on what has been described as a challenging route 🚴😊.  My Bib number is 6401 with a start time of 06:20, so best be up bright and early!!

My first night out ⛺🤯

So testing done, only one thing for it really, try newly acquired “stuff” away from home 🫣 I mean what can possibly go wrong?  Campsite booked (a whole new experience) I’m meeting up with Norman and Hazell; (she is also cycling with Norman on his quest), at Breedon on the Hill, Derbyshire so we can compare notes and generally see how things go.

Testing the equipment 😊

Before embarking on this adventure, I’ve been testing my equipment.  Starting with a couple rides with all the “stuff” on the bike.   I decided to use my endurance Felt bike. Putting a bag on the handlebars of the bike, gave me terrible neck ache and I found steering the bike really heavy, the Frame Bag rubbed my knees😱.  Sore knees 🧎‍♀️and neck ache….. not the best start, so a rethink was necessary.

I thought the first photo was a trophy for your achievement in camping for the first time 😂😂 as usual I do think you are quite mad but love that you are so motivated to push your limits and boundaries- a lesson we could all learn. Best wishes to you an Norman on your adventure x
