Today was just 38 miles (62 km) & 1,470 ft (449 m) of ascent with a lovely cross & headwind π¬οΈ Tynemouth was a fantastic place to kick things off. I've got happy memories of wonderful cycle lanes & fabulous beaches - wld highly recommend a visit if you haven't beenβΊοΈ.
Yesterday during my wander round, I couldn't change gear & a local bike shop told me my front derailleur had a crack in it. Despite many phone calls, no one had the part needed to fix it .π° So when we started our trip next to the Stunning Long Sands Beach, π₯° I crossed my fingers & toes that the derailleur would last the (approx) 200 miles otherwise it's a very long walk! πΆβοΈπ±.
Mark at Breeze bikes in Amble was highly recommend on Insta, Fb & google. I gave him a call and arranged to see him this afternoon. What a guy - a firefighter π§π an Ironman triathlete & really knowledgeable when it comes to bikes. He couldn't fix the problem but he did sort me out with a number of adjustments & a couple of cable ties. So although the problem won't be fixed until a new part is fitted, it shld keep me going ππ€. Thank you Mark π
The initial 28 miles (45 km) took us on mainly cycle lanes along the stunning east coast, with views across to Cullercoats and Whitley Bays, passing through towns such as Blyth, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, and Cresswell. At Druridge Bay, we briefly turned inland towards Amble.
At Amble the fishermen were sat repairing nets in the harbour- great to see.
A number lanes & a couple of busy roads later back toward the North Sea for a night in Warkworth and it's stunning Castle π°.
Warkworth, a medieval fortress located in Northumberland, is proudly maintained by English Heritage, who describe it as "one of the most formidable castles in northern England." It seems like a fantastic destination! Rumour has it that there are wine cellars on-site, which sounds perfectππ·πΎ. I wonder if they actually stock wine and if tastings are available.......π€¦βοΈ
