Day 11 - Rieti to Tivoli

Published on 11 June 2025 at 15:30

Rieti were we stayed last night, is apparently the "Navel" of Italy because of its geographical  location.  Templar knights fleeing persecution are said to have left a sword in stone as a landmark in 1307.  Having been there since 1307, the sword apparently disappeared in August 2020, the bottom part remaining in the rock.! In Jan 2024 the sword reappeared.  The sword is on a tarred road in the woods on the way to a cross country ski resort.   If it's been there since 1307 why would anyone steal it in 2020......

Best Pizza πŸ• of the week in a small street restaurant in Rieti πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ cheap, well cooked & delicious πŸ˜‹.

The hill in the background of the first picture is our leg warmer for the day 😱πŸ₯΅. Other hills to follow 😱πŸ₯΅

Our penultimate day & a tough day in the saddle. The heat kind of hits you when you go out!  So lots of water & electrolytes needed.   We covered some 50 ish miles (80.6 km) & 4,150 ft (1,266 m) of ascent. So I would conclude that as challenging.

The views were spectacular. The following picture was about 1/2 way up the climb. At the top a delivery truck was unloading, so a group of us took advantage of the delay & put our heads under the water tap in the middle of the village 😊. So refreshing 🚲πŸ₯°

Lunch was superb πŸ₯°. A buffet of pasta, flat breads, cheeses, gridled aubergine & courgette, big juicy tomatoes πŸ…, Mozzarella .....finished with fresh fruit 🍈 πŸ‹‍🟩 πŸ‡.

As we approached Tivoli, I stoped to take a photo of the most beautiful waterfall.   This city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, so it's going to be great to look around it this evening.

You've done really well Wendy cycling all those miles. It's sounds like you've had some great meals along the way too. I'm exhausted reading about it xx

You so deserve the sunshine after your previous trips. It does have the downside of exhaustion but you can’t have it all ways. Enjoy the ride to Rome!

Fantastic scenery - a wonderful experience - but my buttocks feel sore at the thought of those hours in the saddle. Would love to do this trip in a car !!!
