Day 2 Brampton to Chollerford, Hexham

Published on 2 August 2025 at 16:17

Brampton is a lovely little town, it does have a statue purporting to be Emperor Hadrian, however it's a little underwhelming & covered in foliage so maybe needs a little TLC.  The welcome we received from the B&B, Scotch Arms Mews, was one of the best I've had in a long time, so deserves a mention. It had a glass well in the lounge area  which looks amazing & is definitely a feature they are proud of.  Following a fab evening meal, we all collapsed into bed.

Today has been fabulous. We have covered some 34 miles (55 kms) and 2700 feet (823 m) of climbing with some cracking 10-12% segments 😱. We are following what is known as the "Military Road" and it is a joy, albeit with a few potholes! The views are stunning and well the puffing and panting to get to the top!

The weather was fab, the views incredible & so much more interesting than yesterday. We got up close & personal to Hadrians Wall. Stopped at Lanercost Priory, various forts and lookout posts. We stopped at Vindalonga and went into the Museum.  An amazing place, they are expecting the ongoing archeological dig to go on for another 200 yrs.

At the "Sill" we stopped for lunch, they have managed to preserve & have part of the once beautiful Sycamore Gap Tree 🌴. 😢 now a very sad part of Hadrians Wall history.

Sycamore Gap 😢

The wall itself is magnificent & although only around 10% if it remains, it is a pleasure to see it & the very many people walking the 80+ miles of it.

Thank you for reading, we are off to explore Chollerford & hopefully get an ice cream 😋😋🤞.
